Art fair season in London draws to its grand finale next week with the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead Heath, and we’re excited to be there again in the same spot as last year - stand F6 near the champagne bar in the centre of the fair.
The time just before a fair can be a little stressful for galleries, but I find this is counterbalanced with excitement as the works to show are gathered together and new pieces start arriving in from the artists. This year we have a number of new original works that I’m really looking forward to hanging in the booth.
Mark Hayward never fails to impress and his new original painting Kamikaze, which literally just arrived with us yesterday afternoon, is no exception; another great piece by the Royal College graduate whose work has come a long way since his degree show back in 2009 where I first spotted his work. In keeping with his recent theme of merging fairground rides with references to war, as seen in works such as
Thunder Bay,
Kamikaze is based on the Pacific conflict during World War II and features Japanese Kamikaze and American fighter planes circling an octopus-style fairground ride.
Another new original piece we’ll be launching at the fair is
On Reflection by
Louise Sanders, who uses high gloss paint on aluminium to create her luxurious one-off works. Vibrant and uplifting, her paintings depict images from recent places she’s travelled to, and On Reflection is based on her visit to the city of Lijiang, a world UNESCO heritage site in south west China that’s filled with wooden buildings and cobbled streets.
Also on show at the fair will be one of the original works by
Carne Griffiths from his collaboration with celebrity portrait photographer Rankin earlier this year, which saw the artist transform a series of Rankin’s fashion shots into his trademark ink and tea works for Hunger magazine. You can read more about this project in my article from July
here.
We hope you can make it along to the fair - see you there!
